Map Whisperer

Ask any web map a question.

Map Whisperer finds the data behind the map you’re looking at and answers in plain English. No GIS software, no training.

Which parcels are in the flood zone?

56 of the 368 parcels in this view are inside the flood zone. I’ve highlighted them on the map. Want a PDF report or a list you can download?

Example conversation. Real answers depend on the map’s data.

How it works

  1. Open a web map

Go to a council portal, government viewer or utility map in Chrome, as you normally would.

  2. Open Map Whisperer

It docks beside the page and lists the data layers it found on that map.

  3. Ask in plain English

It loads the data, runs the analysis in your browser and shows the result on a map you can keep working with.

What you can ask

How many properties here are zoned residential?
Counts and statistics from the map’s own data.
What’s within 500 metres of this point?
Draw a point, line or area, or describe it, then measure around it.
Which of these sites is closest to a fire station?
Compare two layers by distance or overlap.
Colour the zones by land use and label them.
Change how the map looks by asking.
Make me a report I can send to my manager.
Download a PDF report or the data itself.
Export this as a portrait PDF map.
Print-ready maps with your logo, or georeferenced images for GIS software.

Is it right for you?

Made for people who aren’t GIS specialists

Planners, consultants, property and infrastructure teams, journalists and researchers who need an answer from a public map, without learning desktop GIS or waiting on a specialist.

Good to know before you start

It works with the layers the web map you have open makes available. Some maps don’t expose their data this way, and large datasets may need you to zoom in first. Check important answers against the source, because AI and source data can both be wrong.
